Principle and conditions

In the event of the theft of a vehicule, the holder is required to inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office immediately by submitting the following documents:

  • A copy of the theft report made to the Police Department at the place where the theft occurred
  • A copy of a valid ID document (ID card or national passport accompanied by proof of address, or residence permit) or a copy of an extract from the Trade and Industry Registry, dated of less than 3 months

 

If the vehicle has not been found within one month and one day from the date of the theft, the owner must return the registration certificate to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, if it is still in his or her possession, and must request the removal of the vehicle from the registration register.

Formulating the request

The request for the removal of the vehicle from the registration register must be addressed to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office by submitting the following documents:

  • If the vehicle is insured for theft:
    • A registration certificate, if applicable
    • A deed of assignment in favour of the head office of the insurance company
    • A copy of a valid ID document (ID card or a national passport with proof of address, or residence permit) or a copy of an extract from the Trade and Industry Registry, dated of less than 3 months
    • The payment, to be made by cash, cheque or postal order (clearable in Monaco or France), made out to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office and Visa or Mastercard bank cards only, in accordance with the current fee schedule
  • If the vehicle is not insured for theft:
    • A registration certificate, if applicable
    • A copy of a valid ID document (ID card or a national passport with proof of address, or residence permit) or a copy of an extract from the Trade and Industry Registry, dated of less than 3 months

Submitting the application

You should submit the complete application without appointment to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. A payment receipt will be provided in the 1st case.

Collecting the documents

If the vehicle is insured for theft, a certificate for obtaining a "carte grise" car registration document in France bearing the words "stolen vehicle" and an 8-day no-pledge certificate are available within 72 hours at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office reception desk on presentation of the payment receipt.

If the vehicle is not insured for theft, no document will be issued.

Declaring that the vehicle has been found

If the vehicle is found before it is removed from the registration register, the owner must inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office by submitting a report, issued by a police authority, stating that the vehicle has been found. The owner may keep the vehicle registered under the same registration number, unless the number plates are not found with the vehicle.

If the vehicle is found after it has been removed from the registration register, the owner must inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office by submitting a report, issued by a police authority, stating that the vehicle has been found.  

He or she may request, as the case may be:

  • A new registration, except when the vehicle has been transferred to the insurance company 
  • A certificate for registration abroad 
  • A certificate for destruction of the vehicle
