An abdominal aortic aneurysm is an abnormal dilatation of this major vessel in the circulatory system. This common and potentially very serious condition affects 1% of women and 5% of men over 65 years of age, particularly smokers, former smokers, people with hypertension and those with a family history of this condition.
It is fatal in more than 80% of cases if it is not detected above a certain threshold.
An abdominal aortic aneurysm, which is not indicated by any particular sign or pain, can be easily detected by a simple abdominal ultrasound. If the diameter of the aorta is greater than 55 mm in men and 40 mm in women, surgical treatment is recommended. It is effective in more than 90% of cases.
