Principle

Anyone over 16 years of age wishing to stay in Monaco for more than three months or set up home there must apply to the Monegasque authorities for a residence permit .

Residence permits are not issued to children under 16. A travel document  can be issued to make it easier for foreign minors to travel.

The Monegasque residence permit authorised its holder to move freely in the Schengen area.

The types of permits issued

In Monaco, there are four categories of residence permits for foreigners aged over 16:

  • A "temporary" (temporaire) permit can be issued with no minimum requirement period for residency in Monaco.  It is therefore applicable to first-time residents. It is valid for one year and the fee for issuing a first permit is €80
The fee for renewing a temporary residence permit is €40
  • An "ordinary" (ordinaire) permit can be issued to people who have lived in Monaco for three years. It is valid for three years and the fee for issuing a first permit is €100
The fee for renewing an "ordinary" (ordinaire) residence permit is €50
  • A "privilege" (privilégié) permit can be issued after ten years of residence in Monacoto those who have genuinely lived in the country. It is valid for ten years and the fee for issuing a first permit is €160 (the ten-year residency requirement can be reduced to one year in special cases)
The fee for renewing an "privilege" (privilégié) residence permit is €80
  • A "spouse of a Monegasque national" (conjoint de monégasque) permit can be issued to any foreigner who is a spouse of a Monegasque national and who has lived in the Principality for at least one year.  It is valid for five years and the fee for issuing a first permit is €80
The fee for renewing a “spouse of a Monegasque national” residence permit is €40

Late renewals of any category of residence permit are charged at €50.

The fee for issuing a duplicate residence permit (any category) is €80.

To update a permit (any category) in the event of a change in civil status, family circumstances or address, a fee of €30 is payable.

Leaving Monaco

The residence permit must be returned if you leave Monaco.
