Principle and conditions

Licences are valid for one year for professionals and security firms, and for three years for individuals.

Category “A” Weapons

Firearms for defence and their ammunition are designated as Category A.

This relates mainly to the following weapons:

  • designed for central fire ammunition
  • Semi-automatic or repeating
  • Annular percussion hand guns, the total length of which is less than 28 cm

The conditions required for owning Category A weapons are as follows:

  • Membership of the Carabine de Monaco (Monaco Rifle Club) and regular practice with the type of weapon for which the licence is requested
  • A certificate of aptitude and handling of the weapon in question
  • No past history of treatment in a psychiatric unit

Category “B” Weapons

Hunting weapons and their ammunition are designated as Category B weapons.  It is not necessary to have a licence for acquiring or keeping guns in this category in the Principality, unless the weapon has been imported.

Collating the documents

You must supply the following documents:

  • The authorisation application form
  • The sworn statement
  • A copy of your criminal record, not more than three months old, to be obtained from the General Court Registry
  • A medical certificate not more than two weeks old, issued by a doctor authorised to practice in Monaco, stating that you have all of the physical and mental capacities required for possession of a firearm
  • A sworn, signed statement showing that you have never undergone psychiatric treatment
  • A certificate of ability to use the firearm you hold or will acquire, issued by the Special Shooting Commission
  • Proof of registration at the Carabine de Monaco rifle range, signed by its president and stating that you carry out correctly and regularly the type of shooting for which the authorisation is requested
  • A declaration showing how regularly you attend the range, supplied by the Carabine de Monaco

You must submit the application to the Police Department.

Receiving a reply to your application

The reply to your application is given in the form of an attestation from the General Secretariat of the Government. It may take up to one month to receive a response.

How to renew a licence to keep/acquire a category A firearm

Collating the documents

Vous devez fournir les documents suivants :

  • A written request to renew your authorisation
  • A medical certificate not more than two weeks old, issued by a doctor authorised to practice in Monaco, stating that you have all of the physical and mental capacities required for possession of a firearm
  • A copy of your criminal record, not more than three months old, to be obtained from the General Court Registry
  • The firearm bill of sale or a certificate showing its specifications
  • A declaration showing how regularly you attend the range, supplied by the Carabine de Monaco

How to obtain a licence to keep/acquire an imported category B firearm

Writing the request

Importing a category B firearm into Monaco is subject to authorisation from the Minister of State. You must submit a request to the ministry, which should include:

  • Your name(s), surname(s) and address
  • The reason for importing the firearm
  • The type, brand, calibre and number of the firearm and, if applicable, the amount of ammunition to be imported

Sending the request

You must send the request to "Monsieur le Ministre d’Etat".
