Principe et conditions

Education is compulsory for all children aged six to sixteen who are Monegasque nationals or living in Monaco.  Education in the State sector is free; the private sector is fee-paying.

The "lycée" is a secondary school for the second phase of secondary education.

You must enrol your child or children during the time-periods stipulated by the Department of Education, Youth and Sport, unless you have moved to the Principality during the school year.

 

School enrolment periods

For the school year 2017-2018, the enrolment periods at State schools, are from Monday 9 January to Friday 10 February 2017, and from 3 January 2017 for private schools under contract.

A second wave of registrations will take place from Monday 27 March to Friday 31 March 2017 inclusive, for all state schools. Choosing a school for your child

This option prepares students for the General Baccalaureate and for higher education at a University or a foundation course for the Grandes Ecoles (prestigious higher education institutions that are not universities)

It offers three categories:

  • ES category:  General Baccalaureate in Economics and Social Sciences
  • S category:  General Baccalaureate in Science
  • L category:  General Baccalaureate in Literature

Hotels and catering category.

This channel is available to students at the end of Secondary School (Classe de 3eme – Year 10) in three areas of specialisation: Hotels and Catering, Service Sector and Industrial Sector.

The courses last 3 years and lead to one of the following 8 professional diplomas

Hotels and Catering Category

  • Vocational Secondary Education Diploma in Cookery
  • Vocational Secondary Education Diploma in Marketing and Catering Services

Service Sector Category

  • Vocational Secondary Education Diploma in Secretarial
  • Vocational Secondary Education Diploma in Accounting
  • Vocational Secondary Education Diploma in ARCU Reception and Customer and User Services
  • Vocational Secondary Education Diploma in Commerce

Industrial Sector Category

  • Vocational Secondary Education Diploma in Maintenance of Industrial Equipment
  • Vocational Secondary Education Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Energy, Equipment and Electronic Communications Devices

Once students receive a vocational diploma they can continue their studies to the graduate level.

Collating the documents

If your child is in the 3ème (Year 10) at a college Charles III

  • The secretarial office of the college provides you with the registration form for the lycée
  • Fill out the form
  • Return the form to the secretarial office of the college which will forward it directly to the concerned lycée

Your child is attending school in Year 10 (3ème) of François d’Assise – Nicolas Barré secondary school

  • Parents of students attending the François d’Assise – Nicolas Barré secondary school and who wish their children to join a specialised sector of the Lycée Albert 1er or the LTHM, must also enroll of their child during the registration periods determined by the Department of Education, Youth and Sport
  • Parents of pupils of the François d’Assise – Nicolas Barré secondary school who are non-resident, and who wish their children to join a specialised sector of the Lycée Albert 1er or the LTHM, must contact the Department of Education, Youth and Sport from the month of January

You should enrol your child directly at a Lycée

To apply, you will need the following documents:

  • The enrolment form
  • A certificate of nationality and domicile for Monegasques and Monegasque ascendants
  • A certificate stating that you have lived in Monaco for at least three months, for people domiciled in Monaco
  • If you have moved to Monaco recently:  a residence card or a confirmation slip for a residence permit note that enrolment will only be definitive on presentation of a photocopy of your residence card)
  • The child's certificate of civil status, a photocopy of your family record book or a birth certificate showing proof of parentage
  • A photocopy of the child's vaccination records
  • Three window envelopes (DL 110 x 220) with stamps affixed at the current postal rate
  • Three ID photos of the child
  • For divorced parents:  the divorce ruling (translated into French if necessary) and, in cases of shared parental custody, a letter from the second parent authorising schooling in Monaco, accompanied by a photocopy of an official document (such as an ID card or driving licence.)
  • For parents who are separated:  a photocopy of the official document specifying the adult who has custody and, in cases of joint parental custody, a letter from the second parent authorising schooling in Monaco, accompanied by a photocopy of an official document (such as an ID card or driving licence.)  If you do not have an official document, you should provide a photocopy of a family allowance statement and a photocopy of your social insurance card

Testing to assess the child's level

A test will be carried out to assess your child's level if:

  • His or her mother tongue is a language other than French
  • Your child was previously enrolled in a private school that was not under contract

In both cases, the Department of Education, Youth and Sport will send you the contact details of the Head of the school.  You can then arrange the date of the test with him or her.
